A trip to hawaii in dec?
bobbyk asked:
We are planning a trip to hawaii in dec end with 4 year old. I would really appreciate some suggestion what not to miss there and how to save some money on food and travel. we are renting condo with no food or maid facilities. Rented a car already..I have heard food is really expensive there…is there local grocery stores close by (maui island)..is it worth to cook breakfast and dinner home and eat lunch outside?

You can always save money when renting a condo with cooking facilities, verses a hotel where you must eat all your meals out. There is probably a local grocery store “close by” to wherever you are staying. You will pass Costco on the way out of Kahului, leaving the airport. Where are you staying?

It really depends on which island your going to.
Big Island - Volcano, Beach, Captain Cook Memorial.
Maui - Iao Needle, Big Beach.
…im lazy and dont feel like typing much more.

When things are tight for us, I take along a cooler with canned and dry goods stuffed in it.
When we arrive, I pull all of that out and load it up with a case of drinks, ice, etc. Will save you probably 2/3 over eating out (and will probably taste better).
If you see a Zippy’s there, that’s a good bargain for your money.
Maui Tacos is a good buy too.
A decent list is below. Enjoy your trip.

Foodland is a great place to shop, and they have good lunch plates. Be sure to sign up for their Maika’i rewards card. Safeway is a great place to shop, and be sure to sign up for a Safeway Club card as well. K-Mart and Costco in Kahului are great places to shop. For economical dining I recommend Aloha Mixed Plate Lahaina and Paia Fish Market in Paia.
